Yes, You Can Post to Zoomit
It’s a catch 22. A week ago via Twitter I came across a couple blog posts that were quite good, so I suggested to the people who had posted the links on Twitter that they also post them to Zoomit Canada. I quickly received this response:
@zoomit It’s not my article so I don’t feel right posting it.
Not five minutes later, I received this response from the other Twitter poster:
@zoomit Thanks for reposting! But submitting to a news site should be your job or someone who finds it interesting to maintain objectivity
I can’t post because it’s NOT my article. I can’t post because it IS my article. Aside from the obvious no-win catch 22 situation that plays out, there is another element that is noteworthy. Both people felt they could post the link to Twitter and both felt they could not post to Zoomit.
Yes you can. If you can post a link to Twitter or FaceBook, you can post to Zoomit Canada…as long as the post is on a Canadian’s blog or website, or the story is about Canada or a Canadian. Here are the guidelines in bullet format and in video format:
- Any story that is about Canada or Canadians. A story about how Canada declares war on Antarctica is a good example of a Canadian story. A story about how the North Koreans are surreptitiously supplying ammunition to a group of renegade penguins, and happens to mention that Canada has severed diplomatic ties with Antarctica, is a good example of a NON-Canadian story.
- Any story on a website whose domain ends in .ca (such as www.ZoomIt.ca).
- Any story that is on a website that displays a Canadian street address.
- Any post on a blog where the blogger has declared his Canadianness.
- Any site belonging to an organization that is obviously Canadian.

Ok, let’s say I’m giving away the core of my newest project …
… if it’s a good idea, and I’m acting in good faith, it’ll all work out well, right? Right? *grin*
I hope Larry Lessig gets wind of this.
Anyhow, “How I Became Alexander”, or “Catch-22 is Just a Gordian Knot by Another Name”.
The solution I came up with is this: I can’t repost an item and righteously accept benefit from that. But I can post a short/substantial commentary along with a fair-use extract, including a link back to the original … right?
Likewise: I can create a system to facilitate people posting their commentaries on what they find interesting, c/w extract … right?
That’s the spirit of mashup: it’s basic gift economy … give and take.
What’s mucked things up is that there are always those who exploit. *shrug* Human nature ain’t gonna go away anytime soon.
stay well
